The outcast cinema student, Stephen Grace, does not drive cars due to the trauma of losing his brother in a car accident. He befriends, Quaid, who since the age of 6 has experienced dreadful nightmares and daydreams about the death of his parents. Quaid proposes they research about each one’s innermost fear and that is what they find.
Dread is one of the 8 movies at the 2010 Horrorfest, and from the other movies I’ve seen it appears to be one of the better ones. Based on a Clive Barker short story, Dread does a fine job of bringing this gruesome story to life. There are a few scares sprinkled through the movie, but Dread is able to bring some fears to life with some very disturbing scenes. If you cannot handle disturbing scenes in movies you may want to avoid Dread.
The story is progressed pretty well throughout the movie and it keeps consistent with the premise of studying fears. The acting was decent and most the characters played their role well. I especially liked Laura Donnelly who played Abby, a girl born with large birthmarks and who is smart, but struggles through life with that defect. Abby represents the main theme of the movie and each character struggles in their own way. Without getting into spoilers the ending was very dark, but overall Dread is a pretty good indie horror film.

The Double Born Review
loading...
A woman is tortured by the sudden disappearance of her only child years before. Obsessed with having another baby, she is devastated and driven to emotional crisis when discovering her new husband is infertile. Gripped by despair, the woman begins to resign herself to the bitter likelihood of never having another child. Striking up a friendship with two discarded young laborers hired to re-paint her son’s now silent room, the three lost souls form a disturbing bond as the boys are led deeper into the woman’s tormented world.
The Double Born is based off a Bram Stokers tale. The overall budget of the film is low and is very obvious when watching it, however the actors did a decent enough job with what they had to keep the movie somewhat entertaining. The mix of the small budget and small town somewhat complimented each other. With everything that happens throughout the film it is really hard to sympathize with any of the characters, but each try to deal with their issues in their own way. For most of the film I watched in horror at what had happened, which could be considered a plus for the movie, but it also got really weird at times.
Sammi Davis did fairly well with her role, but it could be because most of the supporting actors weren’t as good. Regardless, she was able to pull the role off and fit right in with the twisted tale. Most people might be put off by the weirdness throughout the film, so The Double Born is definitely not for everyone.
