After a horrific car accident, Anna (Ricci) wakes up to find the local funeral director Eliot Deacon (Neeson) preparing her body for her funeral. Confused, terrified and feeling still very much alive, Anna doesn’t believe she’s dead, despite the funeral director’s reassurances that she is merely in transition to the afterlife. Is she dead or is she still alive?

After Life is a limited release film with a few big named actors such as Liam Neeson, Christina Ricci and Justin Long. The strong cast helps save the film as the concept is good, but execution is somewhat lacking. Liam Neeson plays the funeral director well as he easily switches between creepy and normal on the fly. The rest of the performances were fairly good with what they had to work with. The suspense the film should have had felt lacking, but there were a few good parts.

The biggest problem After Life has is presenting the evidence towards whether Christina Ricci’s character is alive or dead. I won’t spoil what happens, but there are a lot of things that conflict and it lowers the effectiveness of the film. It’s still a decent film and doesn’t hand feed everything to the viewers, but might not be a movie you want to see twice.

Ratings Explained

10-9 = Very few movies will get a 9 or 10 and it is reserved for great movies with very few flaws. The acting, direction, music, plot, and ending all have to be excellent.

8-7 = Most highly recommended movies will fall under this range. They will be enjoyable and get a positive recommendation. Some flaws in the film will keep it from getting a higher score, but definitely worth checking out.

6-5 = Films in this range have several flaws and may be entertaining, but lack most of the qualities that make films great. These are generally reserved for when you want to watch a film and don't have too many options.

4-3 = Anything in this range isn't very good, but has a few positives throughout to keep it from getting the lowest scores. Even though the score is low there is still a chance some people may like these.

2-1 = The bottom of the barrel, the only difference between 2 and 1 is that if I can finish the movie it automatically gets a 2, but if it is so terrible that I need to turn it off before it ends then it gets a 1.
